The language of the underland

Positioned outside the gates of the city, the Sphinx is liminal – an outsider, both protector and monster. The Sphinx is a riddle. She perverts semiotics and language. In the story of Oedipus, the Sphinx is pre oedipal – pre language. She speaks in a questioning voice, the language of the underland.
